1. When referring to the Internet, advertising is a term used to describe text or images placed on a web page that promote another company's product or service. A web page advertisement ad is almost always a banner or button located on the top, bottom, or sides of a web page. Advertising helps allow online services remain free since the costs involved in creating a website can be handled with the money generated from the advertising. Ad or Ads An ad is each advertisement that is visible on the web page. For example, at the top of this page is an example of an ad. The most common ad is the banner ad. Ad rotationAd rotation Because many sites or advertising campaigns have several hundred or thousand banners, an ad rotation is an ad rotated through all of the website pages. Ad network A company responsible for handling a companies advertising. For example, Google's AdSense handles advertising for web publishers and AdWords handles advertising for those looking to advertise on Google and other sites who show Google AdSense advertising.

2. An AD is also an acronym sometimes used to describe Active Directory.
